Xiaomi's custom ROM for Android
MIUI Global ROM is a free development program developed by Xiaomi. It serves as the company's official ROM that features its unique overlay on top of the Android mobile operating system. It boasts a UI and feature set specifically made for its line of smartphone and tablet devices.
Similar to Samsung One UI Home, MIUI Global ROM is Xiaomi's attempt at creating a unique user experience with its custom skin for Android. It offers additional core functions, as well as extensive customization options that are not found on the stock version of Google's operating system.
Humble beginnings
Most users today think of MIUI (pronounced as Me You I) as the de facto ROM by electronics manufacturer, Xiaomi. However, the company's history was actually built around creating modified Android ROMs under the name "Mi". It basically comes in two distinct versions. One is made specifically for the Chinese market, while the other, called MIUI Global ROM, is meant for international users all over the world.
Visually speaking, MIUI Global ROM is quite a departure from the stock version of Android. It features more rounded corners, lighter shades, and a generally more colorful interpretation. The experience is also much more customizable and comes with extras features, including enhanced privacy protocols, gesture-based navigation, and more recently, a handy call-screening function. This, along with various performance and battery optimizations that aim to improve the overall user experience.
Just a few things to note before installing and trying out this ROM. While it supports various models across Xiaomi's product line, the experience is inconsistent as some devices don't get the same number of features as others. Also, MIUI has been known to draw heavy inspiration from Apple's iOS for its design, thus some might not be fans of its derivative look and presentation.
